Discover What the Big Box Electronics Stores Don’t Want You To Know About
Home Entertainment Systems

Lewisville, Tex., Jan. 20, 2009 -  Something’s happening in the home entertainment equipment industry that some of the biggest names in retailing would like to keep you from knowing about. What could possibly make these monster companies so fearful – and even go out of business?

Competition – from a most unlikely source. The big box stores are losing ground fast to audio and video specialty shops that design and install home theater and entertainment systems.

Keith Prather, founder and president of Doctor Sound Home Theater, Inc., Lewisville, says home entertainment equipment is more capable than ever, but also more complex. In fact, the complexity now leaves most consumers as ill-prepared to work on home entertainment systems as to repair their automobiles.

Prather quit his job with a big box store more than a decade ago to start Doctor Sound because customers kept coming back to the store to ask him for help making all the pieces work together. The big retailers since have added extra-cost installation services, but Prather says they tend to lag behind consumer needs.

Today’s systems can store thousands of audio and video files and send them to screens and speakers throughout a home or office suite. That not only involves coordinating the functions of TVs and stereo components, but computer networks, lighting and security systems, as well.

“Companies such as ours are entertainment system specialists whose work includes computer networking; we are not computer geeks who do an occasional theater system or board room,” Prather said. “Consumers are now finding out how significant that difference is. All of our technicians are highly trained audio and video specialists, and we are corporate members of the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA).”

While the trend clearly is toward more complexity, Prather says Doctor Sound still works with customers whose needs are less demanding. Often his technicians are asked to trouble shoot simple boxed systems that a homeowner – or big box store technician – has set up previously.
